Yoga Tips for Curvy Women

As a mental health counselor in training, I have been trying to practice what I preach by practicing self-care. Just last month I added yoga to my self-care routine. At first, I hated it! It was so uncomfortable! I felt a lot of the yoga poses were not big girl friendly. Right, when I was about to give up and throw my mat away I found a number of articles on the web providing tips for plus size yogi's. Below are the five tips that helped me through my beginner yoga woes.

1. Dress comfortably. Comfort and fit are key so you can focus on doing the poses instead of futzing with your outfit. I get my workout fits from all over. Stores like Walmart, Old Navy, and Target have fashionable plus size activewear and at affordable prices. If you are willing to spend a few extra dollars try  Girlfriend Collective their sizes range from XS - XXXL and they make the cutest sustainable active wear out of recycled plastic bottles.

2. Find a teacher that works for youTalk to your teacher about your needs. A good teacher will remember the conversation and let you know about modifications and alternative positions during your class. If they aren’t responsive, try different ones. Some teachers are just more passive in nature and don’t know a lot of modifications. Keep looking until you find someone that suits your needs and you feel comfortable with. 

3. Listen to your body. There’s a difference between “hurts so good” and “I think I pulled something.” When you're doing yoga, listen to what your body is telling you. If a pose feels like a good, challenging stretch, that’s great. But if it actually hurts, pull back or modify the pose. 

4. Track your progress. Keep a journal of what you are able to do each session. Write down what was difficult and which poses came more easily. Find a fitness test and benchmark your progress.

5. Remember why you’re there. Yoga is first and foremost a mental practice. The postures provide an opportunity to practice staying present with our physical experience, observing and accepting ourselves at this moment exactly as we are.
